Ivo Nagel (b. 2001, Germany) is an artist working with photography currently based in New York City. Nagel graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Media Arts at Emerson College in Boston (2019 — 2023) and is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design | The New School in New York City (June, 2024 — June, 2026).
Rooted in post-conceptual photography, Nagel produces images that span abstract and pictorial forms – made both with and without a camera. Through a process of intervention, Nagel deconstructs the medium of photography and its relationship to notions of truth and reality. He poses question, mediated through his images around the evolvement of photography, its role in shifting reality, as well as how its ultility is perceived within an image-saturated world. Each work allows a serendipitous spontaneity to inform the visual surface and poetics imbued in the images.
Nagel has worked as a member of the in-house photo team of Annie Leibovitz and travelled across Europe as personal photographer for Sebastian Steudner. He is a recipient of the American Photography 40 award (2024) and Parsons School of Design, 50% Merit Scholarship (2023). Selected group exhibitions include: Contact, Pingyao International Photography Festival (2025); Andes, America, The Corner Gallery, Andes, New York (2024); and Transcending Perspectives, American Center for Photographers, North Carolina (2024). Selected press and publications include Museé Magazine (2025), Die Zeit (2023), and Bloomberg (2021).
